My comeback would never have happened – Yuvraj Singh credits Virat Kohli for his return to international cricket
Yuvraj Singh is a massive name when it comes to Indian cricket. Back in 2007, when India participated in the T20 World Cup with bare minimum experience in the shortest format of the game, Yuvi’s contributions were massive. He proliferated significantly with the bat smashing 148 runs from five innings at a staggering strike rate of 194.73 that featured those famed six sixes against Stuart Broad in an over and that 30-ball-70 against Australia in the semi-final.
If 2007 was a glimpse into his mind-boggling brilliance in the ICC events, the 2011 World Cup was another full-blow showdown of his majesty on the cricket field. Blasting 362 runs from eight innings at an average of 90.50, Yuvraj Singh set the tone perfectly, following which he would come back strongly with the ball clinching 15 scalps that saw him equalling the numbers of Muttiah Muralitharan and Robin Peterson, two seasoned spinners, also becoming the second-highest wicket taker for India in the tournament.
However, the signs started to show for the famed all-rounder of what was to come. Vomiting on the field, he waged a war against India’s oppositions but then once the tournament was over after intensive check-up, it was confirmed that he was suffering from cancer and returning to cricket seemed like a far cry back then.
However, being the warrior that he was, he continued to fight and not only did he beat cancer, but he returned to cricket and donned the Indian threads again. Revealing a tale that was not known till date, he opened up on who was the player who supported him unwaveringly after his return to cricket. In an interview with News 18, he would further reveal that in alignment of Virat’s support, MS Dhoni was the one who gave him the clarity.
Yuvraj said, “When I made my comeback in the Indian team, Virat Kohli supported me a lot during his captaincy. If Virat hadn’t supported me, my comeback would never have happened.”
Throwing a bit of light on how MS Dhoni closed things for him, Yuvraj said, “But then it was Dhoni who showed me the correct picture about the 2019 World Cup that selectors are not looking at you. He showed me the real picture. He gave me clarity. He did as much as he could.”
