MI vs RCB: All the records that tumbled at Chepauk

After 698 calendar days, T20 cricket’s biggest carnival returned to India. The opening clash saw the defending champions Mumbai Indians go head-to-head against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram. The cricket enthusiasts could not have asked for a better start to the tournament as the Virat Kohli-led side romped home in a cliff-hanger at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

From Harshal Patel’s tormenting spell to Glenn Maxwell’s gigantic six - We take a look at significant stats from the opening clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli became the first player to score 6,000 runs as a captain in T20 cricket.
  • Harshal Patel became the first player to claim five wickets against Mumbai Indians in the history of IPL. He also broke a 12-year-old record, picking most numbers of wickets against Mumbai Indians in a single match. The record was previously held by Rohit Sharma, who was then a part of Deccan Chargers.
  • RCB brought an end to their winless streak at Chepauk. Coincidentally, the last time RCB won an IPL match in Chennai was against Mumbai Indians in 2011.
  • Since 2013, Mumbai Indians have never won their opening fixture. The Rohit Sharma-led side on Friday extended their losing streak in the tournament-opening clash.
  • Glenn Maxwell, who bludgeoned his way to a 28-ball 39, broke his six-less streak. Interestingly, the Aussie all-rounder had faced 171 balls without scoring a six in the IPL. The last time he sent the ball over the boundary ropes was on April 27, 2018, against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
