IPL to welcome new rules for the 2022 season
The upcoming edition of the IPL which will be the tournament’s fifteenth instalment will witness a couple of major rule changes that can play an instrumental role in defining the fate of the franchises in high-octane thrillers.
The new rules state that irrespective of the batters crossing while a catch is being taken, the incoming player will have to take the strike unless the dismissal is on the last ball of the over. There is another significant rule change that will be doing the rounds is the number of unsuccessful reviews going up to two from one.
Given the unfortunate advance of Covid in the BBL, a lot of games were forced to be called off. Keeping in mind the unfortunate developments of the preceding edition, the IPL also came with a mandate that stated in case a team has less than twelve players available, “at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season". If, for whatever reason, this is not possible, the matter will be referred to the technical committee of the IPL, and the decision of the committee will be "final and binding".
The rule stood earlier that if the rescheduling was not possible and a team failed to field its players, then the team running short of players will be deemed to have lost the game.
The BCCI also clarified that there may be a change in the prize money for the franchises considering the fact that the number of matches has increased from 60 to 74 and there will be ten teams instead of the normal eight.
The rule-change was earlier implemented by the MCC and was supposed to unfold later in October. However, IPL doesn’t want to delay as the rule changes will be brought into effect right from the first day of the game.
Citing on the disciplinary procedures, BCCI quoted, “In the event the post of Ombudsman is vacant then the Commission comprising the members of the IPL Code of Behavior Committee will step into the role of Ombudsman".
