The 13th edition of the Indian premier league which was originally scheduled to commence on the 29th of March 2020 officially stands suspended indefinitely. The COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) pandemic has struck a major blow to daily activities and economies across different sectors and sports has not been an exception either. Most sporting activities across the globe have been suspended and cricket is no different.

The Government of India took the decision to extend the lockdown imposed in the country till May 3rd. The decision to suspend the league indefinitely has been taken keeping in mind the current situation in the country. A statement by BCCI read, “Due to the evolving global health concerns regarding COVID-19 and lockdown measures implemented by the Government of India to contain the spread of the pandemic, the IPL Governing Council of the BCCI has decided that the IPL 2020 Season will be suspended till further notice.”

The league can only resume once the health and safety of the people is no longer in danger, the statement further clarified. “The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority and as such, the BCCI along with the Franchise Owners, Broadcaster, Sponsors and all the Stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so.”

The BCCI will, however, keep a close eye on any further developments and would be open to exploring a different time to hold the league.
