India emerge victorious in their last fixture of the 2021 T20 World Cup
India sealed the curtains of the T20 World Cup campaign being on the winning side on their last fixtures in the Super 12 round against Namibia. The Men in Blue played their 150th T20 International, becoming the second cricket-playing nation to hit the milestone.
Virat Kohli won the toss on his 50th appearance leading the team in the shortest format of the game, electing to bowl first. Rahul Chahar bagged his opportunity to play his first T20 World Cup game, replacing Varun Chakravarthy.
Bidding adieu to the captain's role, King Kohli shared his emotions during the final toss as India's skipper, stating, "It's been an honour to captain India, and I've done my best. The shortest format has to give way to the longer formats. I've been grateful for the opportunity. It's time for the next lot to take the team forward. Rohit has been looking on anyway, and Indian cricket is in good hands."
India's bowling department took a toll on the Eagles. Jasprit Bumrah led the chart taking the first wicket & then completing his spell with two. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin followed, taking three wickets each to restrict the opponents for 132 for the loss of 8 wickets.
Rohit Sharma & KL Rahul gave team India another blistering start, scoring 86 runs for the opening partnership before the Hitman fell to Jan Frylinck. Suryakumar Yadav contributed to India's comfortable chase, winning by 9 wickets in the 16th over.
Ravindra Jadeja adjourned as the Player of the Match for his 3 for 13 in his four overs spell, taking control over Namibia.
"As a bowler, I did enjoy bowling today. The ball was dry so I enjoyed bowling with a dry ball. Some balls were turning, some were going straight, so that's also a trick, the batsman has to keep on guessing. (On Ashwin) I'm enjoying bowling with him, I've been playing with him since ten years. He's doing wonderfully with the white ball, did it in IPL also. Virat has been wonderful with the captaincy, and I've played with him for 10-12 years too. I always enjoyed his captaincy. He's positive and aggressive that's what you want as a player. (On the departing support staff) They have done a great job as supporting staff for 7-8 years and we've enjoyed being with them," Jadeja complimented the outgoing team coach and staff.
Virat Kohli backed his team for their aggression in the last three matches. "The guys have been fantastic, I know we haven't got the results here but we have played some really good cricket. The guys have really made my work easier. The way we played the last three games, it's a game of margins - T20 cricket these days. Two overs of attacking cricket at the top is what we were missing in the first two games. As I said, we weren't brave enough in those games and in the group we were in, it was tough", Virat concluded.
Team India concluded their campaign on a high note with three back-to-back wins. KL Rahul was the leading run-scorer (194), while Ravindra Jadeja & Jasprit Bumrah ended up as joint-top wicket-takers (7) for the Men in Blue. Rohit Sharma completed 3000 T20 International runs and also reached another milestone - the most catches (44) in T20 Internationals for India.
