India assert dominance with 175-run lead at Stumps on Day 2
After a triumphant opening day’s play of the first Test at Hyderabad, Team India continued to carry forth the momentum procured as the batters pulled off a phenomenal job of keeping the England bowlers at bay. Starting the day at 119/1, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal wanted to go after the bowlers early on.
Much to the shocker of the hosts, they lost Jaiswal early on day 2 as he fell for 80 while Shubman Gill couldn’t capitalise on a good start, holing out to Ben Duckett while trying to hit a boundary. However, that did very little to deter the Indian spirits as Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul continued the charge, helping India to a commanding position.
The duo added 64 runs for the fourth wicket before Shreyas Iyer fell for 35, paving the path for Ravindra Jadeja to take centerstage. Rahul and Jadeja added 65 runs for the following stand and looked good until Tom Hartley managed to dismiss the former for 86.
The Indian batters continued their positive approach nonetheless, this time through KS Bharat, who amassed 41 from 81 deliveries. Ravichandran Ashwin departed for a solitary run but Axar Patel paired well alongside Jadeja to keep the Indian juggernaut rolling. At the end of day’s play, India posted 421/7, with a healthy lead of 175 runs.
