Although New Zealand defeated India in the World Test Championship Final, former all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath believes Virat Kohli has done an excellent job as captain over the last few years. In 2015, he assumed full-time captaincy duties at a time when India were languishing at the bottom of ICC Test rankings. Cut to 2021, Team India have claimed five maces in consecutive years under his captaincy.

“Virat Kohli is a great player and a very good captain also. We shouldn't be emotional, we have many expectations and when our expectations don't get fulfilled we start looking for something on which we can put the blame, the former India all-rounder was quoted as saying to ANI.

Mohinder, who was part of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 1983, praised the current skipper and stated that it is crucial for India that he continues to lead the team. Having led India in 61 Tests, he is the most capped India captain in Test cricket. The records don't just stop here yet. The 32-year-old is also India’s most successful Test captain.

“Definitely he (Virat) is doing a fantastic job and a player like him comes once in a generation. Cricket will keep on moving forward and when there are so many facilities and you play for a whole year obviously your self-confidence increases, ” he said.

Virat has unquestionably played a significant role in the country's meteoric rise in the Test arena. Inevitably, the characteristics of the skipper has also stimulated his teammates to fabricate the same intensity on the field. Mohinder Amarnath sees the shades of West Indies great Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting in the Indian skipper. “In Virat Kohli, I see both Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting so you can imagine how good a batsmen Virat is. And with experience, his performances are improving and it's important for him to continue as captain, ” Amarnath stated.
