I'm trying to make the most of the opportunity: Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has been enjoying a solid patch of form since the 2022 edition of the IPL, and his recent outings in the SMAT have bolstered his claim for a position of a regular opener in the Indian cricket team.

He is currently part of the Indian squad that is taking on New Zealand which has reached its final leg.

Rain has played a major part in both the T20Is, and the ODI series thus far, and Shubman Gill revealed how frustrating the intervention from weather Gods can be. Speaking in a media interaction about the second match getting washed out, Shubman Gill said, "It's slightly frustrating. When the overs were getting reduced, it got quite irritating to be constantly going in and out of the field, unsure how many overs would we get to play. It made our planning difficult."

He further talked about how playing indoors or under closed roofs can also be a crucial option in shaping up the fate of the contest where chances of rain are pretty much on the higher side. Gill said, "It is one decision that has to be taken by the boards. As a player and as fan, it's very irritating to go in and out and have so many games getting affected by rain. I don't know how I can make a difference or take a stand for it; it's a big decision. Playing indoors would be difficult, but having closed roofs would be good."

Shubman Gill has been in red-hot form and has been ticking all the right boxes in terms of getting the desired spot in the Indian cricket team, especially with 4 half centuries and a blistering century in 14 innings. These crucial runs have come at a fine average of 61.27.

Quizzed about whether he sees himself as India's opener in ODIs in the long run, Gill said, "I'm not looking so far ahead; I'm trying to make the most of the opportunity I get, score big and make some big contributions for the team. Even in the last game, the way I was playing, the intention was to play a long innings. Even in the team meetings, the talk was about batting long, about the set batter ensuring that he finishes the innings. It also makes it easier for the other batters to come in and score."
