I’m not the kind of guy who would like to compare - Curtly Ambrose passes his verdict on the Tendulkar vs Kohli debate
A cricketing fan knows better than comparing the likes of two living legends, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli as the two have gifted India countless memorable moments. Not only has India benefitted from the likes of these two icons but even world cricket has been granted a boon of watching both these stars forge their own imperious legacy.
Ahead of Kohli's 500th international fixture that was India's second Test against West Indies, a graphic comparing the numbers of Kohli and Tendulkar flashed across the screen and various experts had their say about one of the most talked about comparisons of all time.
However, one of the front-runners of excellence in the craft of fast bowling, Curtly Ambrose shared his two pence about this raging debate, drawing down the curtains once and for all on the topic, at least from his perspective. Ambrose had witnessed Tendulkar up close during his playing days, having bowled to the Indian legend while observing Kohli maturing into a modern-day paragon.
In an interview with Rev Sports, shedding light on Tendulkar's greatness, Ambrose said, "Sachin Tendulkar was a great player, and achieved just about everything in cricket. You can’t take away from his cricketing knowledge and the way he played. I’m not the kind of guy who would like to compare."
The fast bowling legend then turned his focus towards Kohli, adding, "When you’re a great player and going through a lean patch, like Virat Kohli in the last couple of years where he hadn’t scored a century outside India, people tend to look at him and say ‘Oh, he’s over the hill, he’s struggling cause he hasn’t scored a century,’ and all that stuff. It’s unfair. Every great player goes through a patch where they fail to score hundreds or fail to be consistent. He is still a quality player, I’m really happy he got a hundred. Unfortunately, it’s against the West Indies, but that should do his confidence a world of good, and shut up some people who think he is over the hill. He’s not, he still has a lot to contribute to Indian cricket and cricket in general."
Virat Kohli would be a part of the upcoming ODI series against West Indies that starts from tomorrow while India will be starting their prep for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 from this very fray.
