ICC to offer equal prize money at Women’s T20 World Cup
In a landmark announcement, ICC has made it clear that the winners of the 2024 T20 Women’s World Cup will be receiving equal prize money as that of their men counterparts. Despite the decision being made public recently, the decision was taken in July at the ICC’s Annual Conference.
The tournament which is to be played in the United Arab Emirates from October will see its champions receive a staggering 2.34 million USD which is a whopping 134% increase from the preceding amount. The prize money for the winners in the 2023 T20 World Cup was 1 million USD.
The runners-up will also be receiving 1.17 million USD compared to 5,00,000 USD from the last iteration of the tournament. The two losing semi-finalists will be earning a sum of 675000 USD which will be propelling the overall prize tally to 7.958,080 USD which is an exorbitant leap of 225% from the last year’s tally of 2.45 million USD.
ICC said in a statement, “This move is in line with the ICC's strategy to prioritise the women's game and accelerate its growth by 2032. Teams will now receive equal prize money for the equivalent finishing position at comparable events as well as the same amount for winning a match at those events. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 event prize money is only higher on account of 10 additional teams participating and 32 more matches played."
