I am always ready to play in any position - Tilak Varma
Tilak Varma came in clutch with a crucial cameo of 25 from just 16 balls, steadying the ship for Team India before a sudden wobble complicated the situation against USA in the Men in Blue’s T20 World Cup opener. Talking in the pre-match presser ahead of India's clash against Namibia, Varma opened up on his batting position, while highlighting the importance of a settled batter in the middle-overs.
Explaining the constant shift in his positioning and the versatility that he brings, Varma said, "I am always ready to play in any position, but those middle overs are very important to play for a settled batter. The more I take the game deep, if at all we are chasing, then I like to win the game."
Explaining his dynamics while batting, Varma added, “I take the game deep because we don't have a shortage of power hitting. Everyone is up to smack the ball from opening to number eight. So it is very important to play an anchor in the middle. Like in the batting lineup, one or two batters have to play that role. So I take that pressure on myself, while the rest can go for big hits."
He concluded by talking about how he approaches a particular day, stating, "I think about my batting as per the situation of that day, as every game has a different wicket, atmosphere, and bowler - everything is different. If you play with the same team, every day is different. It doesn't go the same way. So I go to that zone by being in the present. I just stay there in the present and don't think about the future. When I go, I react and take the decision that I like."
