He could be Indian cricket's rockstar: Akash Chopra on Washington Sundar

Not once but twice, Washington Sundar shone with the bat in the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand where the Men in Blue failed to prise out something significant despite a pretty sturdy act.

Sundar blitzed his way past the Kiwi bowlers comfortably as he hammered 37 off just 18 balls in the series opener, while being the lone-warrior for the Men in Blue in the finale with a calm half-century to help them pile up a respectable score from an early ordeal imposed by the hosts.

Sundar scored 88 runs in the series and was dismissed only once. Former Indian opener, Akash Chopra, was quick off the block to heap praises on the southpaw, stating that he can be an asset for India in the near future if he is nurtured with care.

Talking on his Youtube channel, Akash Chopra said, “Make a place for Washington Sundar. If you invest in him properly and he doesn't get injured, he comes with a fragile sticker, going ahead he could be Indian cricket's rockstar. If you see cricket-wise, just his skill level, the potential the guy has, he has everything that should be there in a superstar.”

He further talked about how Sundar can be the perfect pair to Ravindra Jadeja, adding, “The number at which you are searching for an all-rounder, you stop at just one guy, who is Ravindra Jadeja. Then you extend your thinking a little bit and feel that you can keep Axar Patel. Then you wonder whether Ashwin can take that spot.”

“I believe Washington Sundar is a proper all-rounder, he is not an illusionary all-rounder. He showed in this entire series that if you give him the opportunities, he can bowl as well, he will give 10 overs if the conditions are even slightly favorable. In T20 cricket also he bowls for you with the new ball”, concluded the former Indian cricketer.
