Being picked in the World Cup squad for any cricketer is an honour unparalleled and when you score a century in the same tournament, the joys are multifold. Glenn Maxwell is one of those cricketers who managed to smash a World Cup century in 2015 and his narrative of the event is nothing short of pure satisfaction.

Talking about the emotions running wild on his face, Maxi said, “I was going through a reasonably tough time in the World Cup. It was my personal life that was all over the place. I batted with Shane Watson in the game as he too returned after a break. That was the first game that he was back in the side because Mitch Marsh was playing instead of him.”

He further added, “12 months before that, I have not got a hundred. I was just filling in. I was somehow lost. For Australia I had five nineties. For me it was about getting my team to win. I never really thought about hundreds. The more people started to talk about it and the more people started to mention it, I started to think about it. I started to get worried about it.”

Snapping back to the tournament, he said, “I got out earlier in the tournament for 88 against Afghanistan and there were still 8 overs left. That is when people started to point out that look at the list where people have got runs so quickly and you still can’t get a hundred. To me those words mattered.”

He continued, “Looking at Sangakkara, he was firing one hundred after the other and it mattered to us that we posted a big total. Hence, when I got the hundred, I felt that getting my first international hundred in a World Cup, and a peak time during a home World Cup felt so special.”
