Pitted against a potent MI bowling attack, Devdutt Padikkal provided a template for the kind of innings he could play and the cricketing fraternity would increasingly see more of. Several cricket pundits reckon that the youngster has all the goods to play for the country.

Earlier in the evening, Mumbai Indians won the toss and asked Royal Challengers to bat first. Josh Philippe and Devdutt strode out to the middle. They were quick off the blocks, launching a relentless attack on the bowlers. Dev made his intentions clear in the very first over, stepping down the track and effortlessly sending the ball racing over the extra covers. There were reminders that there was something special in the offing. The pair gave RCB a solid foundation, knitting together a partnership of 71 runs in 47 balls.

Devdutt then took charge of the proceedings with a few hefty blows. He notched up his fourth half-century in some fashion as he carted one over the extra cover fielder. Despite the skipper back in the pavilion, the southpaw continued to plunder runs not letting the MI bowlers settle in. Jasprit Bumrah, brought into the attack in the 17th over, struck the crucial breakthrough. In an attempt to amp up the scoring rate, he holed out to Boult at fine leg. The 20-year-old's innings had class and grace written over it. His ability to play the anchor role bred with a natural stroke-making makes him a delight to watch.

Former English cricketer, Michael Vaughan, lavishing praise on the youngster, tweeted: "Devdutt Padikkal looks the type of player we will see representing India for many many years ... Incredible young all-round player."

We said it earlier, we'll say this again… this is just the beginning, there is a lot more to come!
