David Willey to retire from international cricket at the end of England’s World Cup 2023 campaign

England cricketer David Willey has announced his decision to retire from international cricket at the end of England's World Cup campaign in India. Willey’s decision stems from the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) choice to overlook his services as part of the central contracts offered for the 2023-24 cycle.

One of the few shining lights in the midst of England’s ongoing World Cup debacle, Willey has claimed five wickets at an average of 27.20 and chipped in with a few runs lower down the order as well.

Willey, in a heartfelt post on his social media pages said, "I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I've only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England. So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup."

The left-arm seamer, though, specifically addressed the fact that his decision to retire has nothing to do with England’s horrific World Cup campaign, one in which they have won only one out of six matches.

He said, “I feel I still have a lot more to give on and off the field while I am still playing my best cricket, and my decision has nothing to do with our performance during the World Cup.”

While Willey’s announcement means his last game for England will come against Pakistan on November 11 at the Eden Gardens, the all-rounder will continue to ply his trade across franchise-based cricket leagues around the world.

The Englishman was signed by RCB at the 2022 IPL Auction for INR 2 Crore, and has featured in eight matches for the franchise across two seasons. Last season, Willey had picked up three wickets from four matches, before he was ruled out of the season due to a toe injury.
