Cricketing fraternity reacts as Pele leaves the world for heavenly abode
Today is one day where football will take a step back and mourn for one of its greatest heroes embarking upon his heavenly odyssey, the man who defied gravity, who defied staggering odds and most importantly defied the world to transcend himself beyond the mere mortal remains of an ordinary human being, Pele.
The Brazilian magician breathed his last yesterday after a prolonged battle with illness at the ripe age of 82. The entire world has been agog with the name of the Football wizard ever since. From eminent personalities of different walks of life to iconic sportspersons, the shadow of gloom reigns supreme everywhere.
In a staggering lifespan of 82 years, Pele scaled insurmountable mountains in the Brazilian colours, winning the World Cup thrice in 1958, 1962 and 1970, winning the Taca do Atlantico in 1960, Roca Cup in 1957 and 1963, Taca Oswaldo Cruz in 1958, 1962, and 1968 and eventually the Copa Bernardo o Higgins in 1959.
Apart from the team honours, he also amassed countless individual laurels that would need a separate section altogether to talk about the hero of Brazil and Cosmos. The Indian fans were pretty fortunate to witness the talisman up close as he came to Kolkata to play a friendly match with Mohun Bagan on 25th September, 1977.
Pele’s legend didn’t simply stay bound to the ranks of football. The entire world stood still at the passing away of the icon and cricketers were no exception to the same. Here is how the cricket fraternity expressed its grief at the passing away of the icon.
Growing up in Allahabad I heard about Pele and his magic. He was a super star and global celebrity when the world had no internet or social media. Like a true sportsman his fame was because of his skills and those beautiful goals he scored. RIP pic.twitter.com/o2HB2mNe2l
