BCCI issues statement on Smriti Mandana’s condition; Opener’s condition “stable”
Just ahead of the women’s World Cup, India’s aspirations suffered a massive blow as Smriti Mandhana copped a severe knock on her head that left her rattled. In a warm-up match against South Africa, she was dealt a deafening blow that demanded immediate medical attention.
Despite being deemed as ‘stable’ by the medical community, she is still being kept under observation for a mild soft-tissue injury on her left earlobe.
A statement issued by BCCI secretary Jay Shah read, “Smriti Mandhana sustained a blow to her left ear and lower temple while batting in the warm-up game against South Africa in Rangiora. Smriti was immediately assessed by the match-day doctor who expected a delayed concussion."
“After further assessment, Smriti was diagnosed with a mild soft tissue injury to her left earlobe which caused discomfort while batting and therefore she had to leave the field retired hurt," it further stated.
Talking about the status quo, the statement said, “As a safety precaution, she was rested for the rest of the match and is currently under observation. Presently, the opening batter is doing fine and her condition is stable.”
“Her progress will be monitored by the medical team and a decision on her participation in the next match will be taken accordingly,” the statement concluded.
The bouncer came from the recently talked about South African speed demon, Shabnim Ismail whose bouncer knocked the Indian over. Mandhana was initially cleared to play after the concussion test but she shortly left the pitch after feeling the pangs ringing louder than ever with every passing second.
