BCCI formulates a roadmap for new teams, retention policy, mega auction: Report
05 Jul, 2021 By Editor

According to a report in the Times of India (TOI), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has developed a roadmap for the next edition of the Indian Premier League. Among the topics that will be implemented are the introduction of two new teams, player retention policies, mega auction, and increment in salary purse. A tender document for the two new teams will be introduced in August. The bids for the teams will be opened in October, coinciding with the final of the IPL 2021 Final in the United Arab Emirates.

It remains to be seen as to which two cities will bag the bidding rights. The last time IPL had ten teams was almost ten years ago, when Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Sahara Pune Warriors were part of the competition. The addition of two new teams will force the BCCI to increase the number of matches. In 2011, the number of matches was increased from 60 to 74.

The board is also considering increasing the salary budget to INR 90 crore, which is an interesting development. As per the report, franchisees are allowed to spend at least 75% of their purse. There is always a buzz among fans when a retention policy matter pops up. It is reported that the teams can retain a maximum of four players.

Scenario 1: Retain three Indian players and 1 overseas player

Scenario 2: Retain two Indians and overseas players each

However, the salary purse of the teams will be dedicated based on the retentions. The current salary purse reduction is as follows:

  • If three players are retained, a total of INR 33 cr ( 15 cr, Rs 11 cr and Rs 7 cr) will be deducted.
  • If two players are retained, a total of INR 21 cr ( 12.5 cr and 8.5 cr) will be deducted.
  • If only one player is retained, INR 8.5 cr will be deducted.

BCCI may change the retention salary deduction structure as a result of the addition of two new teams.
