BCCI announce 15-member Indian squad for World Cup 2023

On Tuesday, BCCI announced the Indian squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, with Rohit Sharma set to lead the team with Hardik Pandya named as his deputy.

From the Asia Cup squad that's currently in Sri Lanka, three omissions were made in Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna and back-up wicket-keeper Sanju Samson.

KL Rahul, who stayed back in Bengaluru and missed the first two Asia Cup games was named in the squad among the batters, a list that will be headlined by Virat Kohli.

Mohammed Siraj will partner Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur as the pacers, with Pandya's more than handy medium-pace set to play a big role as in.

The World Cup 2023 begins on October 5th and will continue for almost a month and a half. It is a round-robin format that will see all teams play against each other before the knockouts arrive.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, the three spinners in the side, Indian chief selector, Ajit Agarkar said, "Clearly there will be discussions given we have both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel who spin the ball into left-handers. Both give us depth in batting. Kuldeep takes the ball away. In 50 overs cricket, perhaps you would ideally want an offspinner but this gives us the best balance. Seamers tend to bowl a lot more in ODIs as compared to T20 cricket, and perhaps you're a little more under pressure if you don't have an offie, so we're happy with the guys we have."

India squad for Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna
