Arshdeep is a very confident lad, that's why he is here: Rohit Sharma
Arshdeep Singh put in another rollicking display with the cherry last night that saw him courageously steaming in against two set Lankan batters and pushing the game down to the penultimate delivery while defending 7 runs. It could very well have been a last-ball thriller if Pant would have managed to strike the stumps on the fifth ball of the over.
The Indian left-arm quick managed to stitch together a string of well-knit yorkers that left the two set batters struggling to break free and not even for a single ball did it feel like home for Rajapaksa and Shanaka. This isn’t the first time, however, that Arshdeep pulled off such a heroic showdown in the death. He was also clinical against Pakistan, pushing the contest down to the wire in the final over with only 7 to defend.
Captain Rohit Sharma was highly appreciative of the youngster and sang quite a few paeans for the amazing spell that he managed to squeeze in in two consecutive games against juggernauts of the sport, while being critical of the developments on social media as he said, “Honestly, guys don't look too much into social media, there's too much crap happening there. A few losses here and there, few games here and there, one drop catch…I don't think we look too much into it.”
Talking about the dropped catch by Arshdeep against Pakistan which proved costly, Rohit said, “Yes, he himself was disappointed because it was a catch that could've been taken, but again if you saw his confidence in that final over, he nailed that yorker pretty well to get Asif Ali out. That shows if he was down and out, when you're mentally not there, the execution doesn't happen. But in his case, he came out confident to execute. In fact, he just ran into his place and took the ball, because he wanted that over to be bowled by him."
Speaking about the youngster's mental resilience, the Captain was full of prasie. "Even today, he bowled pretty well, those last two overs. He is a very confident lad, that's why he is here. He has been with the team ahead of a lot of guys who are sitting back home because he's clear in his mind, a very confident lad. I've not seen many people like that in their early days of playing for India. He's very confident and wants to do well. He's quite hungry for success for the team, which is a good sign for me as captain. Even Rahul [Dravid] bhai will tell you, we're very happy with how he takes his game, and how approaches his game," revealed the Indian captain.
