Ajit Agarkar on how India will approach squad selection for upcoming T20 World Cup

The Indian selection pool is brimming with talent. The massive depth of the squad demonstrates why India is a cricketing powerhouse. The luxury to field two different national teams at the same time speaks volumes. With the T20 World Cup approaching, it makes it difficult for selectors to choose the best set of players to represent the Indian national team on T20 cricket’s grandest stage.

In a virtual press interaction, former cricketer Ajit Agarkar spoke about how Team India’s selection thought process would be heading into the T20 World Cup in UAE & Oman.

"Suryakumar looks front runner to me this point, one or two performances do not necessarily cement your place but he has been a versatile player. He started his T20 career in the IPL lower down the order and has progressively moved up," Ajit Agarkar was quoted as saying by ANI during the virtual press interaction.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan had a dream entry into international cricket. Both scored half-centuries against England in their debut series, showing their ability to play good knocks in pressure situations. Agarkar believes the two will be in thoughts of selectors for the T20 World Cup.

"Ishan Kishan had a really good last IPL and had fifty on a debut too. I am only taking two names because there are lots of names in the list but these are the two guys who played and did well in the T20I for India," he further remarked.

The upcoming limited-overs white ball series and the second leg of the IPL will be crucial, opines Agarkar.

“There are always those two or three slots the guys are fighting for, and that's why it becomes a lot more important for the consistency coming up ahead of the World Cup. It's an opportunity for these guys to cement their place and there is an IPL as well, so there are lots of opportunities coming in especially in white-ball cricket. The players who are more consistent than others will get a chance, looking at what team management plans are," said Agarkar.

India's tour of Sri Lanka is set to begin on July 18. The men in blue will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in the island nation.
