Ajinkya Rahane will do the job as honestly as he plays his cricket: Sunil Gavaskar
The last phase of India’s tour of Australia is about to get underway. India skipper Virat Kohli will return home after the first Test match of the four-match Border-Gavaskar trophy. The skipper has been granted paternity leave by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will be filling in the role of captain for the remaining three Test matches of the series.
Speaking at Star Sports show Game Plan show, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes there won’t be much of an issue in terms of captaincy after the first Test match. The little master feels it's all sorted well, and even in the absence of Kohli, the team is going to perform well.
"There is no real pressure on Ajinkya Rahane, because both the times that he has led the team, he has won. He led against Australia at Dharamshala and India won. He led against Afghanistan and India won," Gavaskar said on Star Sports show 'Game Plan'.
The 32-year-old has so far captained India twice and have been resulted in victories on both occasions.
"So, as far as his captaincy is concerned, there is going to be no pressure because he knows he is at the moment, only the stand-in captain for three Test matches. So, I don't think the fact about being a captain or carrying on as captain is going to be part of his thinking at all."
While Ajinkya will play his natural game, the classical batsman Cheteshwar Pujara will be the one who is going bring the fight to the Aussies.
"He will do the job as honestly as he plays his cricket, which means, as a batsman, he will go out there and try and let (Cheteshwar) Pujara try and grind the opposition in and play few more shots maybe."
The four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series is set to kick off on December 17 at Adelaide. The first of four Test matches will be a pink-ball D/N (Day and Night) Test.
