A glance at three of India’s biggest wins in the T20 World Cup
In less than a day’s time, Team India will be taking the yard for the first time in the 2024 T20 World Cup as they begin their campaign with a clash against Ireland. On pen and paper, this is a David versus Goliath clash but when it comes to the field, we have known Ireland carving unsettling upsets before.
However, before India takes the yard tomorrow, we thought of bringing to you the dominion that the Men in Blue have knitted over the years with victories that weren’t just crossing the finish line but penning a statement strong enough to send a message to the world. On the eve of India’s clash against Ireland, here are three of India’s biggest wins in the T20 World Cup.
India won by 90 runs vs England, ICC World Twenty20, 2012, Colombo
In what seemed like total domination from the Men in Blue, Team India batted first to score 170/4. Gautam Gambhir (45), Virat Kohli (40) and Rohit Sharma (55*) led the charge for the Men in Blue. England couldn’t even come close within the vicinity of India’s total as they were skittled out for a humiliating 80. Harbhajan Singh spearheaded the pack with figures of 4/12 while Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla backed him up with four wickets between them.
India won by 73 runs vs Australia, World T20, 2014, Mirpur
This was another tough outing for the Indians with the bat as they could only garner 159 runs while losing seven wickets at the end of 20 overs. Yuvraj Singh aced the scoring charts with a 43-ball-60. Australia, however, slipped off the rails even before the wheels started rolling as the Indian bowlers swarmed over them like a cheap suit. Ravichandran Ashwin helmed the bowling battery with figures of 4/11 while Amit Mishra’s miserly bowling that claimed a brace at the expense of just 13 runs was enough to send the Aussies spinning in a vortex of despair.
India won by 9 wickets vs Namibia, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2021, Dubai
With the fate of the T20 World Cup hanging by a fine thread, India had to produce a massive win against Namibia to remain alive in the contest. Bowling first, they did a thunderous job of hamstringing the Namibians as they could only garner 132/8. Ravichandran Ashwin clinched three wickets for 20 runs while Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets too. Coming out to chase, India was right at the top of their game as a sensational opening partnership between KL Rahul (54) and Rohit Sharma (56) sent the Namibians crashing.
