Michael Holding lashes out at World Test Championship's points system
Former Windies fast bowling great Michael Holding has come down heavily on the points system of World Test Championship, terming it "ridiculous."
“It doesn’t work. First of all, the points system is ridiculous. You can’t play five Test matches and get the same amount of points if you play two Test matches,” the Caribbean great told Wisden Cricket Monthly.
“And secondly, at some point, you’re going to have teams who know they cannot get to the final and so those Test matches aren’t going to be all that entertaining. People know it’s just another game," he added.
In the current point system, a team can score a maximum of 120 points in a Test series, irrespective of the number of matches in the series. So, for a 5 match series, each Test holds 24 points, while for a series with just two Tests, the value of each match shoots to 60 points.
Earlier this year in February, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson had also expressed his apprehensions about the point system. Williamson had said that there are elements of the points system used for the World Test Championship which are unfair.
With COVID-19 pandemic throwing the cricket calendar off track, it remains to be seen what changes does ICC come up with to keep the balance and interest alive in the Championship.
India are currently leading the World Test Championship points table with 360 points, while Australia are 2ndwith 296 points. The final of WTC is scheduled to be played at Lords next year.
