Joshua Philippe - A look at records and trivia from the 22-year old’s career
Josh Philippe is the latest star to emerge from the Big Bash League in Australia. Considered one of the most special talents who could become a regular feature in the Australian national setup. The 22-year young Western Australian who plies his trade for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL has already gained a reputation for being a versatile player. While he has enjoyed major success batting at the top of the order, he has been equally potent finishing the innings lower down. Here’s a look at five eye-catching statistics and trivia from Josh Philippe’s career.
487 - Josh Philippe amassed 487 runs in the 2019/20 season of the Big Bash League. The tally of runs was highest among all the Sydney Sixers players and was only overtaken by Marcus Stoinis and Alex Hales across the league. Philippe averaged 37.46 in the 16 innings he played in the tournament, with the runs coming at a strike rate of 129.86.
86* - Philippe’s 86* was the highest individual score by any Sydney Sixers batsman in the BBL ever. Opening the batting for only the second time in the league, a promotion deservedly earned through stellar performances as a finisher, Philippe’s innings propelled the Sixers past a stiff target of 173 against the Hobart Hurricanes. Philippe’s overall strike rate of 158.33 for the 2018/19 season was the highest amongst all his Sixers teammates.
167 - The record for the highest second-wicket partnership in the history of the BBL is held by Josh Philippe and James Vince. The pair put on 167 runs in only 99 balls chasing 173 to win. The record incidentally was previously held by another RCB wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum with Chris Lynn. The Philippe-Vince duo overtook the previous record by 19 runs.
34.39 - Josh Philippe’s average of 34.39 is the second-highest for any Sydney Sixers batsman. Philippe has scored 791 runs in only two seasons for the Sydney Sixers. He ranks a position above his idol, Steve Smith, in the list of highest averages for the two-time BBL champions.
57 - Philippe will be getting his first taste in the Australian national team setup as he embarks on a trip to England before the IPL. However, that will not be his first tryst with international cricket. Playing for Prime Minister’s XI against a touring South African side back in 2018, Philippe scored an impressive 58 off only 53 balls in pursuit of 174. The task was not going to be easy, and Philippe would be rattled early facing up to the Proteas bowling unit which boasted of names like Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir and Dale Steyn. However, Philippe weathered the storm and went on to smash 8 fours and a six to give a glimpse of what was to come.
