An Indian captain was really important – Mo Bobat on picking Rajat Patidar as RCB skipper
RCB had to take a major call ahead of the retentions last year as they decided to bring about a change of captaincy. However, it wasn’t the easiest of calls for the franchise considering the fact that RCB at that point in time was led by one of the finest gentlemen in T20 cricket, Faf du Plessis.
RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, opened up on the intense brainstorming that the entire team had to go through in order to take the call.
They also had the Virat factor in the equation and eventually after much deliberation, they decided to make a move towards a new captain who would usher in a new dawn. It was none other than Rajat Patidar.
Talking in the teaser of Big Basket presents RCB Podcast, Mo Bobat said, “Yeah, look, we spent a lot of time thinking about that captaincy decision. I don't mind saying in my career there aren't that many decisions that I've thought about as long and as deeply as that one. And the thinking started in the season before, you know, we were very blessed to have someone like Faf as our captain. Everybody knows what a champion person Faf is. And he was still a player doing the business at that stage as well.”
He further added, “We could have easily just rolled him over and continued with Faf, having built a strong connection, relationship, and trust with him. But you've got, you know, sport is pretty ruthless and you've got to look at the reality of his age and stage, and again, I mentioned earlier, a big auction, chance to do a bit of a reset. We felt like an Indian captain was really important, you know, it's an Indian competition. So having an Indian captain, I think, is really important.”
