Waqar Younis reveals why India always wins against Pakistan in World Cup

Among all the cricket questions which leave a cricket fan intrigued, one of the most discussed one is: what happens to Pakistan against India in the World Cup. The Indian team enjoys a 7-0 record against their neighbours in the ICC World Cup. The phenomenon has also started spreading to other multination tournaments. In fact, the only major win the Pakistan team has registered in the recent memory against their arch-rivals was the 2017 Champions Trophy win.

Former Pakistan captain and paceman Waqar Younis missed the 1992 World Cup that his side went on to win. In 1996, an Ajay Jadeja onslaught crushed his dreams in the quarterfinal. He was not part of the 1999 campaign and later in 2003 when he was the captain of the team, Sachin Tendulkar’s once in a lifetime innings shocked the Men in Green. Having seen in up close and personal, Waqar believes he has an answer to the enigmatic query.

Interacting with his fans on Twitter, Waqar revealed what he thinks is the reason behind his side’s dismal run against the neighbours in the World Cup.

“Over the last few World Cups, Pakistan have not won against India. We did well in other formats, we did well in Test matches, but when it comes to World Cups and ODI Cricket, India has always had an upper hand on us. And they deserve it. I think they played better cricket than us,” he said.

Younis also opined that in some of these encounters, Pakistan seized the early advantage only to let it fritter away later in the game.

“I remember in Bangalore and back in I think that was in Pretoria in 2003. I remember most of them and I think I have played a couple of them. So, they were a very good side and I think on that particular day they just came out with a very positive frame of mind, they played better cricket and played smartly. We did not play smartly; we had games in our hands. If you look at the World Cup in 2011 and then of course back in ’96 also we had the game in our hand, but it is just, we… we just threw it away.”

“It is hard to pinpoint why we do that, maybe, it’s just the pressure of the World Cup now because it happens so many times, it is just the psychological pressure on us that we just cannot really win against them but yeah, it’s very very difficult to pinpoint one thing,” Waqar concluded.

While India have recently proved that they are a far better side, it does not take away the sheen from the fact that the atmosphere is always electric whenever the two Asian giants clash.
