Upbeat RCB eye further momentum against bruised CSK in IPL’s El Clasico
04 Apr, 2026 By Editor

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru return to action after a week’s worth of preparation as they lock horns with Chennai Super Kings in the first chapter of the 2026 IPL’s El Clasico. With an emphatic win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the season opener, RCB will be hopeful of replicating a resounding performance against CSK.

A strong show with the bat in the first game of the season saw RCB toy around with the SRH bowlers. Jacob Duffy, who made his IPL debut was in sensational form; his opening spell with the ball left the Sunrisers discombobulated. Chennai, on the other hand, have suffered two consecutive losses to start their latest IPL chapter, a statistic they will be eager to change.

Chennai’s batting order crumbled against Rajasthan Royals in their first game while their last clash witnessed Punjab chasing down a monumental total of 210 with more than an over to spare. In the absence of MS Dhoni, things have been slightly tricky on the leadership front for the Yellow Army.

RCB’s batting remains one of their most formidable departments. With Virat Kohli amongst runs in the season opener and Devdutt Padikkal extending his purple patch, RCB will be hoping to see some early fireworks from Phil Salt as well.

However, it is RCB’s bowling unit that will need some introspection after going for 202 runs in the first game of the season. Jacob Duffy will still be the spearhead combined with the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya. With ample experience on their side, RCB will be setting sights on their second consecutive win of the tournament.

Venue Watch

The first game of the season made it clear that Chinnaswamy was back to its label of ‘graveyard of bowlers’ as runs deluged. The new ball in the first innings is what the batters will have to watch out for but as the game progresses, it should be a fairly straightforward surface to bat on. With dew coming in and the surface flattening out, one can again expect this clash to be a runfest.

Personal battles to watch out for:

Virat Kohli vs Noor Ahmad:

Virat started the season with a bang, combining composure and aggression brilliantly. Staying unbeaten for 69 from just 38 balls, Kohli’s presence in the mix offered the much-needed stability to RCB. He will once again be RCB’s vanguard in the batting department, hoping to propel it to a formidable position. Noor Ahmad proved to be expensive against Punjab Kings. However, the left arm wrist-spinner holds certain mystery balls which can actually be a stern test for Kohli.

Rajat Patidar vs Khaleel Ahmed

Rajat Patidar got his IPL 2026 campaign rolling in the fifth gear, hammering 31 runs off just 11 balls. Unless there are bumps along the way early for RCB, it is highly unlikely that he would relent. He would be looking forward to take the CSK bowling unit that has been under the cosh, head on. Patidar is an excellent player of spin and that might compel CSK to get Khaleel Ahmed into the act in the middle-overs. Storming in with a high release point, Ahmed can make the ball move. However, if Patidar comes out to bat at the 11th or 12th over mark, Khaleel will have to bank upon his pace and that might turn out to be an intriguing contest between the two.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar vs Sanju Samson

This is one rivalry that can completely change the course of the game. Samson’s blistering run in the T20 World Cup is a reminder of what he is capable of. And in the IPL, he has looked even more dangerous over the years. Two seasoned campaigners, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Sanju Samson who has been facing each other across various formats over the years can be the talking points of an age-old rivalry in the IPL.
