Stat-blast – Virat Kohli’s ton reshuffles the history books in Thiruvananthapuram

India rattled West Indies in a high-scoring affair in Thiruvananthapuram, chasing 296 with 50 balls to spare. Virat Kohli stayed unbeaten for 139 from just 88 balls while Shubman Gill slammed a ton too as India’s top-order ran away with the game and did so with consummate ease.

As India surged ahead in the ODI series, a flurry of records toppled along the way. Virat single-handedly rode a wave of brilliance to rewrite the record books while Team India also smashed a few feats en route to their clinical win against the Windies. Here is a quick list of the records broken, the milestones created and the feats achieved on a night of dominance by India.

·      Virat Kohli scored his 60th List A One-Day ton, joining Sachin Tendulkar who is the only other batter to pull off this feat. Out of Virat’s 60 centuries, 55 came in ODIs while five of them came for Delhi. Kohli pulled off the feat in just 338 innings vis-à-vis Sachin’s milestone which came in his 538th inning.

·      Virat Kohli became only the second batter to score 15000 ODI runs after Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli brought up the feat in just 303 innings and 15950 balls.

·      This was Virat’s 10th ODI ton against West Indies, the joint-highest number of centuries against a country by an individual. He equalled his own feat of 10 centuries against Sri Lanka in 2023.

·      Kohli smashed nine sixes during his unbeaten knock in Thiruvananthapuram which also became the ODI innings with the highest number of maximums smashed by him.

·      Virat hammered 53 runs off just 26 balls against Alzarri Joseph which is the second highest by him against a bowler in an ODI innings, just behind the 54 off he scored off Trent Boult’s bowling in Mohali in 2016.

·      Kohli’s overall tally of 7006 runs in India from 128 innings saw him surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s haul of 6976 runs from 160 innings.

·      The former Indian captain’s haul went up to 338 runs in Thiruvananthapuram from three ODI innings. More importantly, he still hasn’t been dismissed at the venue, making him the leading run-scorer at the same venue in ODIs without being dismissed.

·      Kuldeep Yadav racked up his 12th four-fer in ODIs, the joint-second-most for India in the format, levelling it with India’s chief selector and former Indian fast-bowling ace, Ajit Agarkar. Mohammed Shami leads the line with 16 four-fers.
