Stat-Blast – Abhishek Sharma smashes records with mind-boggling century

Abhishek Sharma hammered his way to cricketing folklore after smashing the quickest ton in T20I cricket from a full-member side. His 34-ball-108 laid the groundwork for India’s clinical domination against Afghanistan in the final T20I, as the Men in Blue worked their way to a clean sweep of Ibrahim Zadran and company.

En route to his greatness, Sharma toppled a flurry of records while also helping India to shatter through a few collective milestones as well. Here’s a quick glance at the feats achieved, the records toppled and the new milestones set during India’s ruthless show against Afghanistan.

·      Abhishek Sharma’s 30-ball-100 is the fastest T20I century by an Indian while also being the fastest T20I century against a full-member ICC nation. He broke the record of Rohit Sharma who smashed a 35-ball-ton against South Africa in 2017 while also leapfrogging Finn Allen’s 33-ball-century against Sri Lanka earlier this year in the semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup against South Africa.

·      Sharma’s nine fours and 11 sixes, scoring 102 runs out of his overall tally of 108 through boundaries. His boundary percentage of 94.44 is the highest boundary contribution in a century in men’s T20Is. He shattered the record of Muhammad Fahad whose 112 runs through boundaries in his overall tally of 120 against Bulgaria.

·      India racked up 100/0 at the end of their powerplay which is their highest-ever total in a T20I game at the end of six overs. Their previous best was that of 95/1 against England at Wankhede in 2025.

·      Sharma smashed 76* in the powerplay, which is the second highest in men’s T20Is, only behind Muhammad Fahad’s 93 against Bulgaria.

·      Abhishek smoked 11 sixes during his record-breaking innings against Afghanistan, the second highest by any Indian batter in a T20I innings, falling short of his own record of 13 sixes against England at Wankhede last year.

·      Sharma levelled with Virat Kohli in terms of number of T20 tons as he brought up his 10th century in the shortest format of the game.

·      Abhishek smashed his fifth half-century inside a powerplay, becoming the leading half-centurion in T20Is as he leapfrogged Eswatini’s Adil Butt who has four fifties to his name.

·      Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson now holds the highest run-rate for an opening stand for India in T20Is with their 142 from 9.5 overs, recording a number of 14.44. The previous best for India came between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul who chronicled 13.02 during their 165 from 12.2 overs in Indore in 2017.

·      India’s 221/7 is the second highest T20I total recorded against Afghanistan with Ireland’s 225/7 at Abu Dhabi in 2013 being the highest.

·      India recorded their 10th win by a margin more than 100 runs, levelling the plane alongside Canada. Zimbabwe has the next best record with eight wins by more than 100 runs amongst full-member ICC nations.
