Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket

In what is a massive development in the context of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma has stepped down from Test cricket with immediate effect. The opener's decision has brought down the curtains on a glistening 11-year career that saw Rohit play 67 Test matches while captaining the country in 24 of them.

Posting a story on his Instagram, Rohit wrote, “Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

Rohit’s farewell to the longest format of the sport comes ahead of India’s important tour to England where they will be playing five Test matches.

Rohit was initially slated to debut in Tests in the 2010 Nagpur Test against South Africa. However, things went horribly off rails when he suffered a freak injury ahead of the toss.

Eventually, this injury cost him three years of Test cricket, finally making his debut in 2013 against West Indies in Eden Gardens, smashing a century. He followed this up with another impressive ton in the next game played in Mumbai.

In 2019, Rohit Sharma completely flipped the brand of cricket that he would play in the whites as he spearheaded India’s tally of leading run-scorers in the first edition of the World Test Championship. Rohit kept improving his performances with every series, providing India a solid beacon of aggression up front.

The opener's Test career comes to an end with 4,301 runs from 116 innings at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
