I was taken by surprise – Josh Hazlewood on his Test debut against India

Josh Hazlewood made his Test debut in 2014 as India locked horns with Australia at the mighty Gabba. Over the span of the last decade, Hoff has proven to be an integral part of the iconic Aussie pace trio comprising himself, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

The feeling of making one’s Test debut is always special and Hoff was no exception to this. Talking on a video released by Cricket Australia, Hazlewood opened up on his emotions when he made his debut in whites.

Reminiscing his Test debut, Hoff said, “Gabba 2014, November I think. The first test was in Adelaide that year, so it was the second test of the series. It was Siddle, Johnson and Harris, I reckon, in Adelaide. It was the first test after Hughesy (Phil Hughes) passed.”

Revealing when he came to know that he will be playing the Test, Hoff added, “Then we came up here. I reckon I knew, Rod Marsh gave me the heads up a few early, I reckon, three or four days out. I was taken by surprise maybe since. They bowled quite a bit that day as well, it was quite flat. So yeah, came up here and debuted up here.”

Hazlewood registered a fifer in the very first Test that he was playing in the first innings while claiming a brace in the second innings. That was the beginning of a chapter that would have so many glittering pages written over the years.
