First wicket was not out – Josh Hazlewood’s hilarious story on his maiden Test scalp

The feeling of picking up one’s first Test wicket is always special. Josh Hazlewood’s first scalp was a heartbreak for Indians as he got the big wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara. However, it came in a way that had more than what meets the eye for the batting rock of India.

A shorter ball from Hoff saw Pujara being bamboozled as the ball just kissed his helmet and ended up in Brad Haddin’s gloves.

Umpire Ian Gould had no hesitation about giving it out and later on replay it was as clear as daylight that the ball had missed both the bat and the glove.

Talking on a video released by Cricket Australia, Hoff opened up on his first Test wicket and he had no cynicism in admitting the fact that Pujara was not out. In fact, he explained the dismissal in detail and added a little comical shade at the end, stating that India did argue against the usage of DRS ahead of the series.

Hoff said, “First wicket was not out. It was Cheteshwar Pujara. Oh, it's taken the side of the grill, I think. Yeah, it was like a short ball. He went to sort of fend it off, and I think it went over his glove, nicked his helmet.”

He further added, “And it was sort of funny because they argued before the series that they didn't want to use DRS. And that was always the first wicket of the game. Pujara, yeah, nicked his helmet, caught behind, and, just straight out. So, that was a nice start. Pretty good, yeah. Yeah.”
